It's My Party...and I'll Cry If I Want To!

This is how Rykken's first birthday party started! But it didn't last long! His party was great and Rykken seemed to have a lot of fun! He loved getting to see everyone, eating his cake, and playing with his new toys. He did SOOOO good for not having a nap all day long. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the party!

We Have Made It a Year My Darling!

Dear Love,

I must say, this past year has been the most unpredictable year I could have imagined. It was full of hope, excitement, and most of all a kind of love that I never would have imagined existed until I saw and held you for the first time. I didn't realize until you were a part of my life that I wasn't complete all these years before you. You brighten my world beyond what you will ever be able to comprehend. I am so thankful and grateful that I have such a beautiful, smart, energetic, perfect little boy. You give me the energy and the will to keep going on those hard days, and everything I do, I do for you. You have blessed me more than you will ever know and I want you to always know that no matter what happens in the future you will always be loved. You have a huge family who adores you and loves you, and so many family friends (your aunties) who rave about you and are so proud of their baby boy. You have grasped many hearts and you are very special to us all. I am so blessed to be able to call you mine and this year has been the best year of my life thus far, and I can't wait to see what excitement, adventures, and mischief you will bring me in the years to come! You are ONE! YAY!

Sir, your first year has been one of the most turbulent years in history. You came into this world when much uncertainty was on the rise in our nation and around the world. You were born during a very historical year, so I wanted to list some of the major events that took place the first year of your life:

  • You were born during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing
  • You were born during the Iraq War
  • Hurricane Ike hit Galveston, TX and caused huge devastation
  • Barack Obama was elected the first African American President
  • The United States entered a recession, mortgage giants crumbled, along with car manufactures.
  • Thousands of children in China were sickened by melamine in formula
  • Obama ended the stem cell research ban
  • Obama announced the date to end the Iraq War
  • Miracle on the Hudson occurred, All 155 passengers lives were spared
  • The United States declared a Public Health Emergency over the Swine Flu outbreak
These are just a few of the historical events that took place your first year of life, but of course, "you" happening is the most important event that happened this year for me!

Louie's First Hair Cut!

Rykken had his first hair cut today, It has taken me weeks to get up the nerve to take him to get it done. Once again my sentimental side kept getting to me and I wanted to try to hold off for as long as possible before I cut his baby locks off, but it was time, his hair was beyond out of control and I have his baby locks in a special bag put away for safe keeping, and I am okay with that.

Before the hair cut:

During:
Rykken's New Do:
Disclaimer: If you are wondering who in the heck is Louie, it is just one of the many names I happen to call Rykken on any given day, like...Ry Ry, Lucas, Louie, Lou Lou, Beau, Beau Beau, Floyd (okay, just kidding on the Floyd one)...I don't know..I guess I just like to mix it up. His middle name is Luke thats where all the Louie's come from ;)

10...11...2 Weeks Until 12 Months!

Rykken has been so busy growing, learning, and entertaining these past few months. He has flown through his 10th and 11th month and we have 2 weeks until he turns 1! I can't believe this time last year I was already crying and praying he would come soon because I thought I couldn't take it being pregnant any longer. Little did I know my baby boy would be a late arrival, but I would do the whole nine months and labor and delivery all again in a heart beat. I just can't believe it has already been a year, that Rykken has been with me an entire year. I look at him everyday and I obviously see that he has grown and changed, but it doesn't really hit me until I look back at pictures or videos and realize how much he has really grown over this past year. I must say though, Rykken is at an awesome age right now. He is just so fun! We are at the stage where he is able to interact, he is entertaining, so sweet and cuddly, and hasn't started throwing temper tantrums yet or talking back! ;) He has recently developed the ability to mimic gestures and he is able to relate words to these gestures. When I say bye bye, he waves, if I ask for kisses he blows me kisses, he shakes his head yes and no, and he just started doing what I call "sweet eyes". If I tell him "Rykken, give me sweet eyes", he squinches up his eyes and gives me the biggest smile ever.He also has 6 teeth now. The last two that have been coming in over the past couple of days are killers. He hasn't really shown a difference in fussyness with the first four, but whoa...these past two days have been hellish for us both with these two new ones coming in. He has not stopped crying, fussing, whining, all day long, not to mention the drool is incredible, and it has just started with these two new ones. So weird. They have already broken through so hopefully the pain will ease up for him soon. He is still eating tablefood very well, he pretty much eats everything and anything I give him. He loves to eat! He had a doctor's appointment a couple of weeks ago for a plugged ear tube that caused an infection and he weighed 19lbs, still around the 35th percentile for his age. He is a little guy, and although he only weighs around 19lbs, he does have a little round happy belly. He is still mostly in 9mo clothing, although he does wear some 12mo stuff, it is just a little big, but do-able. He is still not walking, although he can stand by himself and does all the time. He can also stand up from a sitting position with no assistance. I still don't think it will be that long before he starts walking, but we shall see. His grandma bought him his first pair or Stride Rites, so hopefully he will start walking with his magic walking shoes! ;) His other talent that he continues to try to fine tune is climbing. The child loves to climb on everything. This is what I watched him climb today. No joke, he climbed this by himself as I sat and looked on.

Big Boy Swimming Pool...

Rykken graduated from the wading pool to the big boy pool. Here is Rykken's first time in a big swimming pool. He much prefers the big pool to the wading pools.

Happy 4th of July!

Rykken celebrated his first Fourth of July in style! We got up early and went to our neighborhood parade. It was the cutest, small town parade I have ever been too. It was a really old fashioned parade with kids riding bikes and mom's pulling their babies in wagons and people riding tractors, and one firetruck. It was great, and Rykken liked it, I think. He was very captivated by it all.
Rykken also played in his olympic sized wading pool out on the back porch that afternoon. Which was a big surprise for me as it was the first time he would actually get in the wading pool without having a melt down. We were also planning on watching the city fireworks from our back porch this year, but they ended up cancelling them due to weather, but Rykken did get to see a couple of big fireworks from a friends back yard. He again was captivated.
